is there an xsl function or solution that will capitalize only the first

using a css I can use text-transform, but this will not work when creating a
pdf. any advice?
The XSLT Standard Library has a template for performing
capitalisation, either of a single word or all words in
a sentence. Also CamelCasing, etc.
