Amazing, considering you've loaded up string($URL) with a ton of extraneous
whitespace. To ensure portability, either put it all on one line, like
(assuming your mail reader doesn't wrap this):
<xsl:variable name='URL'>http://localhost/sql?sql=select+*+from+authors+where+au_lname='<xsl:value-of select='lastName'/>'+for+xml+auto&root=query</xsl:variable>
or like this:
<xsl:variable name='q'>'</xsl:variable>
<xsl:variable name='URL' select="concat('http://localhost/sql?sql=select+*+from+authors+where+au_lname=',$q,lastName,$q,'+for+xml+auto&root=query')"/>
