the answer is: no. You may not replace all uppercase letters with
'nothing'. try
starts-with(translate($C11n, 'ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ',
'XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX'), 'X')
