The XSLT Standard Library, http://xsltsl.sf.net/, has a
general solution to this problem - str:to-lower.
<xsl:variable name='ampm'>
<xsl:call-template name='str:to-lower'>
<xsl:with-param name='text' select='//Music/programme/ampm'/>
</xsl:call-template>
</xsl:variable>
