ACK. that was almost it. I had declared:
xmlns:rsss="http://purl.org/rss/1.0/"
but was referencing rss:item
(notice the extra s.)
sorry to fill the list with useless questions!
Thanks for the help though, it made me look at the declarations a little more carefully.
