thanks but,
this doesn't work in this case:
***XML***
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<?xml:stylesheet type="text/xsl" href="simple4.xsl"?>
<data>
<info>aaaaa</info>
<info>bbbbb</info>
<grinfo><info>ccccc</info></grinfo>
<grinfo><subinfo>blabla</subinfo><info>ddddd</info></grinfo>
</data>
***XSL***
<?xml version="1.0" ?>
<xsl:stylesheet xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform" version="1.0">
<xsl:output method="html"/>
<xsl:template match="info">
<tr>
<xsl:if test="(position() mod 2 = 1)">
<xsl:attribute name="bgcolor">#EEEEFF</xsl:attribute>
</xsl:if>
<td>
<xsl:apply-templates/>
</td></tr>
</xsl:template>
<xsl:template match="data">
<table><xsl:apply-templates/></table>
</xsl:template>
<xsl:template match="grinfo">
<xsl:apply-templates/>
</xsl:template>
</xsl:stylesheet>
the row with ccccc and the row with ddddd have the same bgcolor
using position() in this case seems to work just with siblings.

Or (along the same line) simply define the CSS styles for "row0" and
"row1" and write:
<tr class="row{position() mod 2}">
.../...
</tr>
:)
