Hi,
How can I get an <xsl:value-of select="." /> to return only the value of the
current node and not it's child node as well?

I think you asked the wrong question.
the expression you quote does, by definition, return the value of the
current node (only).
If you want the value of the text children of the current node
do <xsl:copy-of select="text()"/>
