Try putting the xsl:for-each around the xsl:call-template:
<xsl:for-each select="$src-root">
<xsl:call-template ...>
<xsl:with-param ... select="key(keyname, ...)" />
</xsl:call-template>
</xsl:for-each>
The template will only get called once because you only select one
node ($src-root), and within the xsl:for-each, the call to the key()
will search in that document.
