because the "normal" view of XML/SGML trees is that they are not. The
tree structure comes (mainly) from the element nesting, and attributes
are essentially labels on the nodes in that tree.

XSLT was considered controversial because it declared that the parent of
attribute nodes were the element (so the .. abreviation worked) not
because it declared attributes were not children.
