Note that makes val3 into a result tree fragment containing a text node
that contains the string value of the number

<xsl:variable name="val3" select="$val1 + $val2"/>

would set val3 to be the number. Although there are few places where
this would make any difference, the main being

select="foo[$val3]"

which will select all foo elements if the first form was used but just
the second if the second form was used (and val1 and val2 were as in the
original post both 1)
