Yes! You are right - I forgot  that apply-templates 
can also have with-param.

Maybe. But it seems that apply-template with modes is 
really unavoidable entitiy of xslt logical VM.  I mean 
apply-template with modes is enough to express most
of other constructions, but the opposite is not true.
