No, you don't want to replace [ by <, you want to generate an element
node based on the value of the alt attribute, with [ and ] removed.

<xsl:template match="img">
 <img src="{@src}" />
 <xsl:element name="translate(@alt,'[]','')"/>
</xsl:template>
