Then use the text output method not XML output.

Just define them to be something else, for example:

<xsl:template match="*">hello</xsl:template>
<xsl:template match="text()">good bye</xsl:template>

well you could make the default * template as above, without the hello
but your stylesheet would probably be clearer if instead of applying
templates to things you don't want, you just apply them to things you do

  <xsl:template match="a">
          <xsl:apply-templates select="d"/>
     </xsl:template>
