Going one or two steps farther toward full pointer arithmetic,
it would be handy to be able to return addresses of $target->field
expressions rather than their values. Then those addresses could
be passed to embedded-C code, or printf("%m") for further processing.
Syntax could look like "& $target->foo" as in C, or "$target->foo&"
sort of as in C++ references, or "$target->foo$" to be a wee more
cryptic.
