Yes, just under a different name (with the major version appended).

Okay, then we should a configure detection logic for that.

Red Hat Developer Toolset is different in this regard, either you get the newer GCC on the PATH as a substitute for “gcc”, or you run gcc with an absolute path. I suppose those who regularly build upstream sources could add a symlink from /opt/rh/…/gcc to ~/bin/gcc5, where the patched configure script would pick it up (assuming that they do not want to enable DTS unconditionally).
