Oh, I was reading it as (unique (pair of (set) and (message number))).
You're saying the actual intent is (unique (pair of (set number) and
(message number))).

When the original sentence was ungrammatical, that makes sense.  I'm pretty
sure I saw some cases where the original sentence was grammatically correct.
