'fraid I can't think of anything really clever. We don't seem to have
enough commonality to be able to make it all into a single macro, or a
pair of macros, unless we sacrifice performance for clarity. I'm not
sure you actually want me to pursue this, or was just kidding, so
please let me know if you want me to keep trying to improve this.
