mbtowc function not working.

Hi,
I am a developer working with novell. I have been trying to use
this mbtowc function with RedHat 7.0 , which comes with glibc-2.2. The
gcc version is 2.96 . But the mbtowc function fails to convert any value
above 0x7f . It returns a -1 value. But the same thing works on Solaris
2.6 , with the gcc-2.95 compiler. Can you help me out as to how do I
convert multibyte characters above 0x7f to wide char using mbtowc.
