I've deleted everything under /usr/local that was included in that listing.
I've then run ldconfig again. Still no init prompt. The /etc/ld.so.conf
doesn't have /usr/local/lib in it, but then, as I mentioned earlier, it is
six weeks old, which doesn't make much sense to me.

/usr/local isn't in root's $PATH, but I'm not sure that is what you mean.
