glibc - 2.6.1 - These critical programs are missing or too old: as ld gcc

I am receiving the following output during the configure of glibc-2.6.1. I do
not understand why it is finding old versions of: as ld and gcc as I have
recently successfully installed all new versions of binutils-2.17, gcc-4.2.1
and autoconf-2.61.
Why aren't the new versions being picked up by the installer? If it's
anything to do with PATH please forgive me as my skills in the linux field
are fairly limited to say the least but any help will be appreciated.
Thanks. (P.S.: This is running on a SUN Cobalt RAQ550 build)
