Now that the 4.18 release is almost out (jimb is packaging as I write), it's time to think about what to do next. There is a whole backlog of interesting contributions to add in, there have been some good bug reports that need looking into, and the code, as always, needs energetic hacking to fight off entropy. One of the things I'd like is to get more people actively involved in maintenance. There are a number of things that will be happening, setting up of a CVS repository and such, but all that is merely setup for the actual work of improving the code, which requires people. At this point a number of Cygnus engineers have signed up for specific pieces of GDB maintenance, and I've appended the list to this message. But as you can see, there are many holes too. If you choose to become a maintainer, there will be several expectations of you: you need to be technically proficient (though not necessarily expert) in the area you maintain, you need to enforce the GDB coding standards and practices as well as general FSF policies, you need to be willing to discuss changes with contributors and fellow maintainers. There is no manual for how to do all this, so you have to be willing to learn on the job; fortunately, there are plenty of people to offer helpful advice, even when you don't want it. :-) So, if you're interested in helping with this very important job for the GNU project, please send me mail describing the specific areas you want to take on, and we'll get things going.
