Ignorant question: why does the kernel have to be COFF if some libraries in userspace are? Are you linking them to the kernel or what? and redboot only starts the kernel.. I am just curious.

Umm... you are right. But I guess my issue here is I do not have control over the linux image. Maybe I need to put this question to the team who builds this linux image.
