elf and coff object format

hi,all
I am new to ecos and GNU/Linux.
My platform is PC 386,
i386-elf-objdump tells me the format of execute file(eg hello) is elf32-i386,
I know there is a UNIX command cof2elf,
and can the elf object files be converted to COFF format?
The MS Visual C++ compiler produces COFF file format, and are these two 'COFF formats' compatible or completely same .
