I agree that it would be nice if the XHTML stylesheets had an output mode
that provided better support for CSS styling.  Certainly role attributes
will be part of it, but I'm not sure that copying all role values out to the
XHTML is the right approach.  People use role for a lot of purposes that
have nothing to do with styling. And in some cases they would not want the
role values exposed in public HTML files (I did some work for a company that
wanted the role values mapped to different strings on output). I've spent
some time thinking about designing a system of markup and stylesheets that
would make CSS writing easier and more powerful, but I haven't had much time
for it.   I would be curious to hear from others who have ideas about how
the stylesheets can support CSS better.
