Take a look at the Text Encoding Initiative site: http://www.tei-c.org/

This is a pretty large and complex scheme that is used by folks in the
Humanities for marking up texts. There is an roughly equivalent DTD to
Norms Simple DocBook that might be what you are looking for. In
addition, there are style sheets for converting to HTML and PDF and,
something new that I hadn't seen before, there is a XMetaL
customization... mmmm; I'll have to look at that. And finally there is
Pizza Chef, a web application that will generate a customized version of
TEI based on your responses to a form. (I wonder if DocBook is ready for
something like that?)
