line break and text output

A couple of quick questions:
Is there a way to force a line break, something line <br/> in html?
(Putting each ine of a poen in <para> tags just doesn't look good.)
I can get html output and postscript output, can I get text output? This
is using the stuff that comes with Debian: sgmltools, jade, Norman Walshes
stylesheets etc.
