| The graphic files in PNG format are erroneously referred to as GIF files
| by the generated html files. It seems PNG format dosen't get recognized as
| a valide file format, thus the default extension 'gif' is appended to
| those files in .png.

See www.gnome.org/gdp/gdp-handbook/gettingstarted.html. They have a PNG extension to the Docbook DTD and a custom stylesheet for PNG support.
