pdfTeX upgrade kills jw

I couldn't get PassiveTeX to run properly under my old teTeX/pdfTeX
versions, so I upgraded. Now PassiveTeX works, but I can no longer get PDFs
from SGML

I am running Red Hat 7.2 on my IBM T21 ThinkPad. I installed Red Hat's
upgrades at http://www.w3.org/TR/2001/WD-xhtml1-20011004/ in order to allow
PassiveTeX to function properly on my computer. It worked. Unfortunately,
the upgrade seems to have somehow disabled the OpenJade/jadeTeX/jw
toolchain. Now, when I attempt to use those portions of jw (docbook2pdf)
that rely upon pdfTeX (docbook2pdf or docbook2txt) I get the following
error message:

      This is pdfTeX, Version 3.14159-14h-released-20010417 (Web2C 7.3.3.1)
(Fatal format file error; I'm stymied)

I suppose that means I need to upgrade a format file, but which one and how
do I upgrade it?

Has anyone else here gone through this?
