You haven't said what title you're trying to override (book, section,
etc.), but if you look around, I bet you'll find an
'<element>.titlepage.recto.mode' template that's doing the real work.
This has to do with the way that titlepages are designed to work which
is, I regret, very poorly documented. I have better documentation that
will be ready for publication in a few weeks. (Basically, after XSLT/UK.)
