[PATCH 0 of 2] complibs: misc enhancements

All,

This mini-series to add a few, small enhancements to the handling
of the companion libraries.

Distributions are catching up-to-speed wrt those libs, and upcoming
stable releases will have the required versions of those libraries.
So we'll soon to be able to rely on these rather than build our owns.

This does not yet introduce such support, but prepares for it.
