Indeed, the original crosstool has been unmaintained for the past two
years or-so.

I would suggest you look at crostool-NG, which I maintain:
  http://ymorin.is-a-geek.org/projects/crosstool

In this case, I would suggest that you debootstrap lenny/i386 on your fast
testing/x86_64 machine, chroot into that, and run the builds from there.

This way, you'll get the exact same compiler, with no hassle to build it.
