I understood from my experiments (shortly after I
accidentally hg-email-bombed sourceware.org with a multimegabyte patch by
a too eager attempt of resending the readlink vs. test -L patch ;-)
that the whole hg email command and the numbers it gives in the subject do not have anything to
do with the mq managed patch series.
Your calculation of 'x' above is only true by coincidence if you start with
an empty patch queue in a nonmodified repo clone and then after patching use --outgoing.

E.g. the referenced email was sent using the -r command line argument. I have now
10 patches in my mq queue, 9 with the mac os stuff,
and this HOWTO is the 10th patch, series index 9.
However, this email was sent with the subject "1 of 1" you can see above.
