can you (hypothetically) build a toolchain with no thread support?

Subject: can you (hypothetically) build a toolchain with no thread support?

  before i try to isolate another build error, i'd like to know if
what i'm trying to do is even possible.  should you be able to build a
toolchain with no thread support at all?  that is, neither
linuxthreads or NPTL?
