disable 'create executables' autoconf tests for cross compiler

Hi

when cross compiling to i486-elf using crosstool (latest) i get the folloing
error.

checking whether the C compiler (
/home/mfletcher/nucleus-builder/build-gcc/gcc/xgcc
-B/home/mfletcher/nucleus-builder/build-gcc/gcc/
-B/home/scx/gcc334nucleus/i386-elf/bin/
-B/home/scx/gcc334nucleus/i386-elf/lib/ -isystem
/home/scx/gcc334nucleus/i386-elf/include -O2 -g -O2 ) works... no
configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C compiler cannot
create executables.
make: *** [configure-target-libiberty] Error 1

so my question is how do i disable this test, as normaly cross compilers
cannot generate executables that will run on the host.

is it an enviroment variable from autoconf i can override.

regards
