Never mind... I distinctly remember that at one point I tried using the normal pre-processor dependency generation without success, but now it appears to be working:

$ arm-elf-gcc -c -MMD -MF crt0.d crt0.S -o crt0.o
$ cat crt0.d
crt0.o: crt0.S

Just thought I'd let y'all know in case auto-dependency generation is something that interests you.
