MIPS -G NUM option

Hello,

In gcc.info-8. (gcc-3.2)

>MIPS Options

>`-G NUM'

Why NUM is 0 By default, when GNU assembler is used.
It must be 0, or not?
 
When Compiled a C source code with -mgas, NUM is not seems to be 0.
How make NUM to be 0, By default.
