MIPS -G NUM option


Hello,

In gcc.info-8. (gcc-3.2)

>MIPS Options
>------------  
>`-G NUM'
>     instead of the normal two words used.  By default, NUM is 8 when
>     the MIPS assembler is used, and 0 when the GNU assembler is used.

Why NUM is 0 By default, when GNU assembler is used.
It must be 0, or not?
 
When Compiled a C source code with -mgas, NUM is not seems to be 0.
How make NUM to be 0, By default.
