The quick answer is no.

The recommended command
$ export PATH=$PATH:${PREFIX}/bin
puts the powerpc-eabi tools AFTER the native tools, I guess.

I would expect the reverse to fail earlier in the make all-gcc process, isn't it?

It is unclear to me which of the two specifications applies (namely the PATH
setting and the --prefix setting in the configure step).
