upgrade question

I'm trying to install the latest kernel (2.6.6) on a Red Hat 7.1 system
currently running 2.4.26. Compilation is interrupted by:

/tmp/ccmZfaem.s: Assembler messages:
/tmp/ccmZfaem.s:3: Error: Unknown pseudo-op: `.incbin'
make[1]: *** [usr/initramfs_data.o] Error 1

I have googled this error and it *seems* like this is a result of
running an outdated binutils package (the Changes file asks for 2.12 or
better, I've got:

$ ld -v
GNU ld version 2.11.90.0.8 (with BFD 2.11.90.0.8)

My actual question, then, is how do I upgrade an RPM-based binutils
package without an upgrade RPM? 7.1 is ancient history at this point but
I've been able in other areas to move away from RPMs and install source
packages. I'm under the impression that if I uninstall "-nodeps" the
current binutils I'll have bootstrap issues with the new binutils
sources and won't be able to compile them. Can binutils in fact be
upgraded in isolation?

Any wisdom from Those Who Know Better?

Thanks.

Peter
