There is already talk of making a new binutils release from the trunk, but
this is still some way off. I have been meaning for some time to cut one
final version from the 2.11 branch, and we could certainly consider including
a patch for option (1) above. This can be done much more quickly - indeed, I
was hoping to have done it already, but my PC at home is broken right now and
I haven't had time to do anything about it.
