There are many reasons that I never liked/used the binutils release
branches. It is one of them. 

FYI, I have been maintaining a version of binutils for Linux, which
is based on the current binutils in CVS. It can be found at

http://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/devel/binutils/

Although I only test it on Linux/ia32, it should work on platforms
the current binutils in CVS supports. If you use it on non-Linux
platforms, you can file the bug repots against the current binutils
in CVS.
