I hate to chime in but I had the same problem. I realized my ContentHandler
was spitting out the nodes in System.out fashion which yielded newline
characters.
So maybe that may that's the case here? How are you testing this to get
your result?

When apply the normalize-space, it give this message error:
xsl:element must have a valur for name attribute
