One of those stunning insights that has you wondering what the hell
you were doing trying to loop in the first place.

Just to add to that - if you don't know what characters might be in
the tag element value (i.e. can't write a string that holds them all),
you could use the value itself as the first string, and use a *long*
list of Xs as the second string:

  translate(tag, tag, $lots-of-Xs)
