to answer your quesition, well I want to display the XML data in the order
it's in. There will be title and bodycopy tags mixed under the document tag
(title and bodycopy are siblings), so if I were to use apply-template and
select title and body copy individually, then that will cause the titles all
be displayed first. Also title and bodycopy are displayed in different
styles i have to use choose-when-otherwise to distinguish the difference
between the sibling tags. I'm not sure if there are other ways to do this
which is better coding, but I can't think of any other. hope that answers
ur questions.
thanx for the reply!

why match on * and then have to have an xsl:choose to distinguish the
cases? it would be more conventional tand a lot simpler to have separate
match templates for each case.
However your problem is
<P class="bodycopy"><xsl:value-of select="."/></P>
value-of gives the string value of the node (ie character content of the
node and its descendents) It doesn't apply templates to that, so
your template for <link> will never be applied.
<xsl:template match="title">
<p class="title"><xsl:apply-templates/></p>
</xsl:template>
<xsl:template match="bodycopy">
<p class="body"><xsl:apply-templates/></p>
</xsl:template>
<xsl:template match="link">
<A href="{.}"><xsl:value-of select="."/></A>
</xsl:template>
