You must be reading some strange articles.
See the document() function.

<xsl:apply-templates select="//lab[@manager=current()/@ID]"/>
will select all elements who's manager attribute is the same as
the id of the current node. (If you are doing this a lot it may be worth
using the key() function to avoid repeatedly searching the document.

You can generate unique identifiers with generate-id() (but they don't
count as ids to th eid() function)
