As long as you're passing parameters, just pass in the class as well:
<xsl:with-param name="class">
<xsl:if test="position() mod 2 = 0">tableshadedRow</xsl:if>
</xsl:with-param>
> </xsl:call-template>
> </xsl:for-each>
> </tr>
> </xsl:template>

You forgot
<xsl:param name="cellData"/>
And also add
<xsl:param name="class"/>
And then you can just
<td>
<xsl:if test="$class">
<xsl:attribute name="class">
<xsl:value-of select="$class"/>
</xsl:attribute>
</xsl:if>
<xsl:value-of select="$cellData"/>
</td>
</xsl:template>
It might be no more difficult to add the class elements on the <tr>
elements instead of on every cell.
