I've done this, and I still get the same error:
<xsl:template match="projects">
<xsl:variable name="sortType" select="'numeric'"/>
<xsl:apply-templates>
<xsl:sort select="*[name()=/PAGE/@sort]" data-type="{$sortType}"/>
</xsl:apply-templates>
</xsl:template>
Again, the error is:
