The hit count typically is higher than the number of visitors because of
multiple visits.
Does your ISP give you the number of unique domain addresses accessing the
page? This is what I use to track popularity as a given visitor may hit
the page a number of times. It unfortunately obscures a number of
different visitors using the same proxy address as one which hides numerous
visitors from the same company or location or ISP using a proxy, so is
*lower* than a true count.
For example, 5784 unique domain addresses have taken the time to download
the free preview of our book (using 17316 hits) from April 1999 to April 2000.
