The drawer for unit info etc. sounds like a good approach if it is flexible
enough (i.e. you can pick exactly what items to display and ideally also
where on the screen). I would favour the popup option for dialogs.
Replacing the whole screen is not such a bad idea either, if you can cycle
between screens using a keyboard shortcut. This could be used to implement
both lists and multiple maps as well as help. On the whole, multiple whole
screens is probably better than either a clutter of panes (unix xconq) or
windows (mac xconq). That's why commercial games use this approach a lot.
