in the packaging world, even snapshots are versioned sanely.  this could be via 
a datestamp like 2.2.0.201501, or by indicating that this is a pre-release snap 
like 2.3.0_pre#.  GNU toolchain projects use the snapshot method, while other 
GNU projects use the 90/99 suffix like 2.2.90.  i don't think using a dash is 
all that common (ignoring distros themselves repacking things).
