Sorry if this goes off on a tangent you possibly don't want to hear
about, but do have a look at the Guix project [1] -- either to actually
use it or just to steal some ideas.

They (try to) tackle exactly this problem field of build dependencies
and of parallel use of several version sets of things.

You get a baseline of already packaged things, and I have the hunch
that you get a good chance ar changing this or that component without
having your world break down every time.

(Don't be fooled by the GuixSD slant on the page -- you can install
Guix as an additional package manager on top of your running system)
